Kalamazoo Trail Blazin': Week Three

As the trees blossom and spring flowers bloom, a special network of trails in Northern Kalamazoo offer more than just a walk through the park. The Kalamazoo Nature Center, recognized as one of the nation's best, strives to reconnect you with nature. The trails at the Kalamazoo Nature Center provide education in addition to exercise.

Kalamazoo Nature Center:

The Kalamazoo Nature Center offers 14 trails covering 10 miles of varied habitats, including ponds, swamps, streams, prairies and forests. The trails vary by difficulty. Easy trails are less than one mile and offer lively views of many habitats. Moderate trails range from one-quarter mile to almost two miles and difficult trails are less than one mile with steep ascents and descents.

Located at 7000 N. Westnedge Avenue, admission to the Kalamazoo Nature Center is ranges from $4 to $6 and is free to KNC members. It is open Monday through Saturday, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. and Sunday, 1 p.m. – 5 p.m.

Finishing (or Starting?) Strong

The starting line at the Borgess Run for the Health of It is also the finish line. At the blast of an air horn, a record crowd of more than 1,300 runners—myself and younger sister included—began a 13.1 mile journey around Kalamazoo. It was my sister’s first half marathon, and in typical elder sibling fashion, I double-dog-dared her to sign up, but then provided the much-needed moral support to help her prepare for the big race.

My sister was quick to point out a tangible energy at the Borgess Run that is unlike most races. And she’s right. While it boasts some impressive athletes and course records, there’s a welcoming atmosphere for both the seasoned and first-time runner. Maybe it’s the camaraderie developed during the Borgess Run Camp. Or maybe it’s Gazelle Sports’ Chris Crowell cheering through the speakers. Either way, the buzz of positivity combined with sunshine and a light breeze made it one of the most enjoyable race-days I could remember.

What I forgot about an hour into the run was that my sister holds several track and cross-country records at Kalamazoo Central High School—and the heart and endurance required to make those records never really fades. By mile 12, my younger sister, now several steps ahead, was reaching back to pull me toward the finish. In one race, our roles as sisters reversed. Despite years of bossiness and badgering toward my sister, she was willing to embrace the role of encourager when I needed it most.

Surrounded by an electric crowd, the two of us crossed the tape hand in hand. While my sister was ecstatic to have completed her first half marathon, I was pretty much just happy to have her as a sister….and as a best friend. The finish line at the Borgess Run for the Health of It is also the starting line.

Local Author Releases "Promising" Read

Michelle Miller-Adams was dropping her four-year-old off at preschool when the Kalamazoo Promise was announced on a public radio station. In the days that followed, she grew to understand not only the simple stipulations of the Promise, but also the resulting social and economic complexities. As a mother, educator, social scientist, resident of the Kalamazoo Public Schools district and concerned citizen, Miller-Adams admits she could not have divulged in a more satisfying research subject.

In-depth interviews and community and economic research compile Miller-Adams’ new book, The Power of a Promise. Appealing to audiences of all ages, readers agree that Miller-Adams’ book is a pleasant commentary that addresses the successes and challenges of the Kalamazoo Promise—which is followed by asking important questions regarding the future of the scholarship.

From the W. E. Upjohn Institute's Web site:

“… In the first comprehensive account of the Kalamazoo Promise, Michelle Miller-Adams charts its initial impact as well as its potential to bring about fundamental economic and social change in a community hurt by job loss, depopulation, and racial segregation.

Drawing on cutting-edge research in the fields of education and economic development, Miller-Adams combines insights from these disciplines with an unparalleled understanding of the Kalamazoo Promise based on extensive interviews and observation from the program’s earliest days. Her book tells the fascinating story of why the Kalamazoo Promise came about, how the broader community has responded to its introduction, and its impact—real and anticipated—on Kalamazoo’s students, schools, social fabric, and economic future.

At a time when communities across the nation are striving for greater economic competitiveness and expanded educational opportunities for their youth, Miller-Adams’ firsthand account reveals both the promise and the challenges inherent in place-based universal scholarship programs and offers guidance to all those working to prepare their communities for success in the twenty-first century."

The Power of a Promise is available for purchase from Kazoo Books and the W.E. Upjohn Institute. To read the introductory chapter, click here.

Kalamazoo Trail Blazin': Week Two

April 22 marks earth day--and there's no better way to observe the holiday than to enjoy and participate in the preservation of our earth's natural beauty. Week 2 of Kalamazoo Trail Blazin' takes you to Asylum Lake, a large plot of preserved land surrounded by growing businesses and a bustling Kalamazoo. Before you hit this trail, please remember to honor earth day by limiting the waste of water and electricity, and by reusing paper and plastic bags, tin foil and old fabrics before you recycle them or throw them away!

Asylum Lake:

Owned by Western Michigan University, the Asylum Lake Preserve is located in the southwest corner of the City of Kalamazoo. It consists of more than 274 acres of prairie, forest and trails surrounding Asylum Lake. These grounds remain a research hub for WMU professors and students of anthropology, biology, geography, hydrogeology and environmental studies.

Parking for Asylum Lake is located on Parkview Avenue and on Drake Road, between Stadium Drive and Parkview Avenue. Foot trails leading to the lake may be accessed on Winchell Avenue.

Guest Column

By Kendra Stetser Rowe

What a difference a year makes! It’s been my privilege to help Ministry with Community transition in a number of ways since taking the position as Executive Director on February 11th, 2008. Allow me to share with you what I’ve learned.

• People are resilient and strong and amazing beyond belief
• All things are possible when we focus our creative energies
• Extending dignity and respect doesn’t protect me from sometimes being hurt or disappointed
• The only true gift to give is something the other person values
• Giving with expectation is a recipe for disaster
• I can be both inspired and heartbroken within a single encounter
• Our community is filled with humble, generous, kind and brilliant people

I’m delighted to report that, while many of us are fearful about our economy, many of us are focusing on the simple things in life, showing gratitude for the smallest blessings and giving from the heart – whether it’s a smile, a dollar or a kind word.

What astonishes me most is the frequent answer I receive from folks who come to the “drop-in” -- people struggling with homelessness, poverty, mental illness, addiction, family crisis, loneliness and despair. The question I try to ask with my heart is a genuine “how are you?”

The answer I hear most is “I’m blessed.” I’m blessed. Let that sink in.

This is the most frequent thing I hear from people who are carrying all their worldly belongings in one duffle bag or suitcase or plastic grocery bag. These words ring out from a gentleman in soiled clothes and with what appears to be a tumor growing on his forehead. And I hear them again from a young mother with 5 children (2 in a stroller and 3 holding on) who just lost their home in a fire. They are echoed by the lady who looks like my grandmother and whom I’m worried will be attacked again this summer in the park.

So when I get annoyed by the car that cut me off on Rose Street yesterday. Or irritated that the dry cleaners didn’t press my suit correctly. Or snippy with the clerk who gave me hot chocolate with extra whipped cream instead of green tea. Or worried that I might have aged more than just one year this past year, I have a good laugh at myself and take a note from my friends here at Ministry – I am blessed, indeed.

And then I ask myself: who’s serving whom?

Be blessed, your choice --

trail blazing

"Leave it on the Curb"

Every day—whether I read the front page, turn on the TV or just listen to the whispers around me, I wonder, where is the good news? I’m saddened and frightened by the failure around me. Failure on the grandest scale has trickled its way to hurt and unnerve people just like me. Failure breeds negativity and hopelessness. Failure kills dreams.

As a self-proclaimed dreamer, my innate fear of mediocrity is fear enough without the heavy influence of mass failure. I remember posters in nearly every classroom in grade school that read, “Attitude is Everything.” And perhaps more than a pay raise, a vacation or a promotion—what I really need is an attitude check.

Several days ago I received a bright yellow post card in the mail from the Salvation Army. It asked me to donate my gently used clothing and household goods to families in need in Southwest Michigan. All I had to do was box it up, attach the bright yellow card to the box, and leave it on the curb.

And that’s exactly what I intend to do. Looking into the face of pessimism for me is like looking into the face of a stranger. I will remove my blanket of doubt and place it in a box—along with some kitchen wares and clothing. And before I leave it on the curb, I will attach that bright yellow card.

I’m going to clean up my attitude, and leave it on the curb. I’m going to box up my troubles and leave them on the curb too. Fears and failure? Straight to the curb. I know that if I leave fear, failure and negativity on the curb, there is a bright, golden invitation to hope—and to appreciate much to be thankful for.

Hidden Gem: Brook Lodge Hotel & Conference Center

Brook Lodge Hotel & Conference Center, one of our area’s hidden gems, is nestled on more than 600 acres of woodland in Augusta. What is a historical site for the founder of Kalamazoo’s Upjohn Company continues to make history for couples and families around the world.

Originally the summer retreat of Dr. W.E. Upjohn, Brook Lodge has transformed into a full-service conference center, now owned by Michigan State University. The 40-acre campus of Brook Lodge has been meticulously kept for more than a century. Gardens, gazebos, nature trails, streams and Old Mill pond outline three halls and eight unique cottages boasting more than 40 rooms.

As a premier wedding site in Southwest Michigan, Brook Lodge offers more than just a pretty landscape. The bride and groom may choose from several sites on the property to host their wedding and reception, including Genevieve’s Garden, the Conference Hall, the Upjohn Ballroom, the Doctor’s Cottage, the Dining Hall or a tent among the gardens.

Brook Lodge prides itself in top-notch guest amenities, a professional and attentive staff and elegant food service. It was recognized by Wedding Wire and The Knot’s “best of weddings” in 2008. Brook Lodge was also recently selected for the 2009 Bride’s Choice Award for demonstrating excellent quality of service, responsiveness, professionalism, value of cost and flexibility.

In addition to weddings and weekend getaways, Brook Lodge offers an elegant setting for social affairs, corporate retreats and special events. By partnering with Crux Move Consulting, Brook Lodge hosts corporate team-building exercises, including a secluded ropes course. It also plans elegant dinners and buffets for the general public, including an Easter buffet, a Wine Dinner with the Kalamazoo Wine Taster’s Guild and a Mother’s Day buffet.

Kalamazoo Trail Blazin'

Kalamazoo hasn't exactly seen a tropical heatwave. But recent warm(er) temperatures are a vast improvement from a long, harsh winter. In the coming weeks, ShareKalamazoo would like to share some of our area's finest trails to run, walk or bike off the extra steam (or pounds) accumulated while being snowed in time and again.

Week One: Al Sabo Preserve

Al Sabo Preserve is located in southwestern Kalamazoo County and is comprised of 741 acres of marsh, forest, streams and rolling hills. With more than 25 miles of trails, this preserve provides various recreational opportunities for walkers, runners and bikers. Due to erosion, more than two thirds of the trails are now closed to cyclists, however more than seven miles remain.

Nestled into the preserve are two boardwalks that provide access to the west branch of the Portage Creek and Atwater Millpond. There are also numerous overlooks along the trails that provide panoramic views of the preserve’s terrain and wildlife.

The trailhead and parking for Al Sabo Preserve is located on Texas Drive, near the intersection of Texas Drive and 10th Street. Access may also be gained to the Preserve from foot trails originating at Rota-Kiwan Boy Scout Camp and the Texas Township campus of Kalamazoo Valley Community College. Al Sabo is open all year from 8 a.m. until sunset.
