Kalamazoo County's New Year's Resolve

It’s that time of year.

If hearing about New Year’s resolutions isn’t fun enough, you can always find your
fill of New Year’s predictions. I’ve always enjoyed the intersection of the two, as I’m a believer in self-fulfilling prophecies.

As a community guy myself, I believe that our economic development guru, Ron Kitchens, had it right when he said the other day (as quoted in The Gazette) that you
can’t let someone speak negatively about your community. I would only add that it’s also important to invite them to join you in doing something positive.

I’m positive about what 2010 has in store for Kalamazoo County. I’m positive for several reasons. First, we’ve got some excellent leaders, starting with Ron Kitchens. Second, tough times produce winners and losers, and we have what it takes to be a winner -- civic infrastructure, social capital, human talent and resources galore. I would add ingenuity, the legacy left to us by W.E. Upjohn, Homer Stryker and others.

Dropping in, then, on that intersection of resolution and prediction, here are three things in my crystal ball for 2010.

1. Kalamazoo County is more likely to have an airport than an arena.

Very funny, you say. Kalamazoo County already has an airport. Exactly. Thank heavens. I’ve said for a quarter century that a great community needs three things: a strong downtown, good schools and an airport. In no particular order. Picking one over the other is like saying you have a favorite child.

But wait, you say. Ron Kitchens, CEO of Southwest Michigan First said, “an arena downtown is more important to the community than that airport is. Absolutely more important.” The sense here is Kitchens is sacrificing logic to prove passion.

Keep in mind that the ink’s not that dry on the W.E. Upjohn Institute report that shows that the airport contributes 484 jobs and more than $175 million in sales to the area. Plus the next $45 million of public investment in the airport is coming from outside of Kalamazoo County, money that otherwise would land elsewhere. I think we have to be careful not to inflict “death by 1,000 cuts” to our airport.

The operative concept in the arena discussion, of course, is downtown development. What the community chooses to build downtown includes the “do-nothing” option, so I’m solidly with those who believe we need something bold, creative, strategic, sustainable and inclusive to drive the type of activity Kitchens and others are talking about. An arena could fill that bill.

2. Food is going to be big.

Don’t ask me how I know. I’m not even sure myself. But this childhood obesity thing has gone on too long. I happen to think food will cut across sector and issue
boundaries. The view from here is that food somehow is going to play more prominently -- possibly dramatically -- into education, health care (duh) and yes, possibly even downtown development. And don’t forget neighborhood development. We still need a replacement to the North Side grocery store.

3. Collaboration will count.

The true definition of collaboration is “working with the enemy.” The major
community dynamic facing us is our vulnerability to divisiveness. Young vs. old, black
vs. white, rich vs. poor, urban core vs. suburbs, liberal vs. conservative. We all know the dividing lines. The question is how we will work together across those lines on the Big Three -- downtown development, schools and the airport -- and other issues that face us.

Community politics -- or what I call “open system politics” -- have little resemblance to “closed system politics” -- the kind you are seeing in Lansing and Washington, D.C. Community politics demand a greater level of understanding of those things which directly touch our lives.

I predict that what we will accomplish will depend on how well we work together, and that starts with listening. We need to resolve, as a community, to reach out to those we purport to help, and create a bigger “we.”

Falling for Michigan's Autumn

I have never liked autumn. For me, fall is a punitive descent into the abyss of winter. I am Canadian and the climate I am accustomed to includes harsh winters and paltry summers.

The fall season I am used to consists of brownish-gray leaves and stale grass. The first snowfall can plague the city even before the leaves have had the chance to turn yellow; burying piles of soggy, smelly leaves to rake.

But I must say, being in Kalamazoo this fall has warmed by heart, slightly, to this season.

Michigan's version of fall starts with a hint of something in the wind – a mix of rain clouds hovering in the sky and the fragrance of moist forest trees; traces of fall can even be smelled in the middle of downtown Kalamazoo.

The leaves change color slowly, and there are four colors the leaves can flaunt: green, yellow, orange or red. Red leaves! Never in my life have seen such an exuberant and vibrant red.

A heavier jacket is generally required, but if the sun chooses to shine, it emits enough heat to sport a sweater and comfortably enjoy an afternoon stroll.

The wind blows and whistles with force during the night, shaking the trees and the walls of the house. Rain may sprinkle, but clears in the morning light with remnants of puddles and scattered leaves on the car window.

A Kalamazoo fall is a gentle transition into winter. So far, fall is stretching into its third month with no sign of snow and sparse leaves still dangling from tree branches. The sound of kids can be heard while they muster leaf piles and laugh in the rain, jumping around in their rubber boots.

So, I've experienced enough of Michigan's beauty to almost be excited for the first flakes of snow to fall. Almost…

A day in the life of a young student who recently put Kalamazoo on her map

Let me introduce myself: I am a twenty-something, young married, world citizen who has had a diverse mix of cultural encounters, some more pleasant than others. I’ve lived in a different city every two years since I was in high school: a couple years on the west coast of Canada, another year just east of the Rocky Mountains, a few years over the pond in Europe and most recently, I’ve found myself in Kalamazoo

Kalamazoo. I had to convince my family and friends that the city I am in really does exist. I explain that not only does Kalamazoo exist, but that it is a noteworthy city as well. Other than offering a world-renowned music program, the fact that Tim Allen of “Home Improvement” attended Western Michigan University was a major selling point. I now have a waiting list for my futon.

When I live a new city, I like to surpass the role of tourist. I prefer to get involved and play the role of citizen. Before I even arrived in Kalamazoo, I had signed up for a soccer team, located the Farmer’s Market and mapped out the nearest mall—with a complete analysis of the store directory. For me, the adventure of travel begins in unraveling the roots of local tradition and discovering the heartbeat of a city. The beginning of the journey usually starts with observations.

I have never been one for the razzle-dazzle of big city flair. The London-Eye was, well, tall. The Lago di Garda was vast and people in Amsterdam spoke better English than Dutch. Kalamazoo’s downtown area has somewhat of a European feel between the brick buildings, the parks and the arcade-style mall. I like that history has been maintained and rejuvenated in this city. On Sunday afternoons, I like to run downtown to explore new sights and continue my observations—from cozy benches to piano bars and street-side cafes.

The Farmer’s Market is the greatest jewel I have found so far. If I were to give a tour of Kalamazoo, this would be one of the first stops on the map. I try to get to the market at the crack of dawn on Saturday mornings before all the pies and cinnamon buns have sold out. The warmth and neighborliness of the vendors draws me back with anticipation each week. I’ve already made a friend. His name is Fred, and he has the best apples in town.

As I have learned to embrace cultures rather than qualify them, I have collected invaluable experience and knowledge along my journey. I realize that I still have a long way to go in understanding the inner workings of Kalamazoo. But I have enjoyed my initial immersion and look forward to what I will discover next.

The "Green" Tea Drinker

Dressed up and ready to go out for an evening, I tucked my cell phone into my purse before knocking on the heavy oak door. I had one obligation to fulfill before a night on the town, and approximately one hour to spend in quiet observation. Or so I thought.

I was invited to a tea party. And as I looked up at Tudor House Tea, a charming home nestled atop a hill in a Parchment neighborhood, I was prepared to sip a steaming cup of something brewed for a mature, rather serious palate.

To my surprise the heavy door opened to roaring expressions of awe and laughter. Nearly a dozen women hovered over a tray of tea canisters in an enchanting but regal living room. I was hardly seated before a small container of strawberry-kiwi loose-leaf tea was held before my face. As its fragrance drifted at me I briefly escaped to childhood summers filled with popsicles and Orange Crush.

Orange Crush was the “tea of choice” at my last formal tea party. But that was almost 20 years ago, when soda was an appropriate tea substitute for children dressed in nightgowns playing with grandma’s miniature tea sets. My adult experience would prove just as fun.

We were seated at tables with fine china, tiers of freshly baked scones and dainty jars of whipped lemon curd and flavored honeys. Tudor Tea House owner and tea expert, Lady Jeri Holcomb, poured our tea as she explained its history and health benefits. A lace scarf draped delicately around her neck, I was as taken by Jeri’s refinement as by her facts and stories.

We first sampled Organic Romantic Rose, a white tea with high notes of peppermint and hints of lavender. Later we were poured cups of Organic Masala Chai and Sweet Cranberry, two black and very versatile brews. I learned that while white, green and black teas originate from the same bush, it is how they are processed that develops their color and flavor.

As Lady Jeri listed the health benefits and anti-oxidant properties of tea, I took notes and leafed through a catalogue of flavored teas, teapots and china. I realized that my elbows were on the table—I may not have been as polished as I envisioned the tea drinker. But at that tea party, I became fascinated with the healthy beverage and the camaraderie that evolved as our cups were lifted and returned to their saucers. Two hours had gone by and I was late for my night on the town.

I left Tudor House Tea with two bags of loose-leaf tea. Because the varieties I chose can be brewed more than once, my high quality tea is surprisingly more affordable than the “leftover” tea that is sold in bags at the supermarket. What was more affordable was the tea party itself—it cost nothing to host or attend.

Throughout the year, Verhage Farms is best known for its apples, cherries, peaches and pumpkins. Each fall, Verhage Farms becomes a popular destination for seasonal activities, such as pumpkin picking, apple picking and hayrides.

More than 100 years of delicious history sit on the property at Verhage Farms. An old cider mill produces homemade, unpasteurized cider. In the mill there is also a small bakery that makes a creative variety of fresh donuts and caramel apples.

The Cider Mill at Husted’s Farm Market produces fresh apple cider weekly. The Husted’s grow more than 20 varieties of apples and offer u-pick to its patrons. Gene The Pumpkin Man

Known as the “land of orange” and featured in Michigan students’ textbooks, the homestead of Gene the Pumpkin Man is a bright, Southwest Michigan landmark.

The 130-acre farm is located at 22637 M-43 in West Kalamazoo. You can’t miss the orange barn, tractors and farm vehicles belonging to Gene the Pumpkin Man, who typically dresses in, you guessed it, all orange.

Gene the Pumpkin Man grows a variety of winter squash and pumpkins. He offers natural Halloween decorations, including straw, sunflower heads, Indian corn and corn stalks. He harvests more than 250 tons of pumpkins and 40 tons of squash annually.

Gull Meadow Farms Fall Fun & Corn Maze

Gull Meadow Farms offers a variety of fall-themed family-friendly activities. Whether picking apples, touring the apple barn and market or visiting the pumpkin patch, Gull Meadow Farms is a place where family traditions are made.

Open seven days per week, Gull Meadow farms also features wagon rides, a pumpkin lane train, a zip cord and an obstacle course. Its most popular attraction is the corn maze. West Michigan Haunt Park

In it’s 8th year, the West Michigan Haunt Park returns to the Kalamazoo Speedway with two attractions for the price of one. The Phobia House

Voted one of the best haunted houses in Michigan, the Phobia House has been recognized by the public for its maximum scare factor in respect its monsters, originality, detail, theme and special effects.

The Haunt on KL

The Bronco's 2009 Homecoming and Family Weekend kicks off Saturday, October 24. Fine-Tuning Your Health - A Local Perspective on Health Care

With the President addressing the nation on health care this week, I thought I would share a few thoughts on health.

I am grateful for the health care available to me. I am grateful that I have a doctor and health professionals that can measure, analyze, and intervene when needed to support my health. I am grateful that there is research that deliver products that can assist in overcoming illness. And I am grateful there are systems, organizations and people that provide health care to all that are in crisis.

However, my health is first and foremost my responsibility. I am the conductor to my orchestra of health. I compose the scale, harmony and pitch. I produce the calibration and integration of the best fuel, hydration, movement, strength, rest, mindfulness, humor, attitude, and love that create my health symphony. I know when the parts are working in concert or are in discord. I need others for insight, education, motivation, guidance and love, but it is the actions that I take that reflect in my health.

I understand that my health is significantly impacted by my genetics (thank you Mom and Dad). I know that there are environmental toxins that are impacting my health. I know there are accidents that have and will occur that change the course of health. I know that the intersection of biology, physiology, sociology, emotions, and faith are not understood clearly enough to define optimal health. Yet I know what provides me energy, vitality, balance and joy. And I know that I must choose these for my life’s health.

I will be responsible for my health; choosing and acting to the best of my ability and knowledge. I will eat less – move more – breath deeply – smile and laugh – keep an open heart – balance work and play – and always love.

Savoring its 24th year of local fare, the Taste of Kalamazoo is sure to offer a celebration to satisfy every palate. From July 23-25, the Taste will feature cuisine from more than 30 restaurants, as well as live entertainment and family fun.

Each year the Taste of Kalamazoo attracts 25,000 to 30,000 hungry people who crave world class cuisine prepared by local restaurants and caterers. Tickets for food and beverages—from fresh fruit juices and smoothies to top-shelf liquors and local brews and wines—are $.50, with most items ranging in price from $.50 to $4.

Family activities at the Taste, including face painting, pony rides and appearances by a juggler and comedian start at 11 a.m. each day. A “grill off” is planned every day from 3 – 6 p.m. and special family programming, such as the Hospice of Greater Kalamazoo’s Great Duck Race, is planned from noon – 3 p.m. on Saturday.

Kindleberger Summer Festival

The community of Parchment invites you to join in their annual celebration of family, community and the arts: The Kinleberger Summer Festival. Kindleberger Festival week spans from Wednesday, July 8 through Monday, July 13.

The Kalamazoo Valley Blues Association presents the 16th Annual Kalamazoo Blues Festival in Downtown Kalamazoo. The festival runs July 9 – 11 at Arcadia Creek Festival Place, located at 145 E Water Street.

Kalamazoo Kings Fourth of July Spectacular

The Kalamazoo Kings’ ninth annual Fourth of July Extravaganza starts and ends with a big hit: The Kings will take on the Washington Wild Things at 5:05 p.m. and the game concludes with a performance by Drop 35, the band that gave way to American Idol favorite Matt Giraud. Highlights of the evening will also include airline ticket giveaways from DirectAir and spectacular fireworks display after sunset.

Field of Flight Fireworks

The Field of Flight Air Show and Balloon Festival will take place through Sunday at the W.K. Kellogg Regional Airport in Battle Creek. The Air Show and Festival include food, family fun, carnival games and rides, live entertainment and balloon launches in the mornings and evenings.

A fireworks display is scheduled for Friday, July 3 at 10:30 p.m. (With a rain date of Sunday, July 5 at 10:30 p.m.) Admission to the Field of Flight Air Show and Balloon Festival is $10 per person from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. and $5 after 5 p.m. Children 4 ft and under get in free. Galesburg Speedway Eve of Destruction

The Galesburg Speedway will host an Eve of Destruction on July 4. An entertaining night is planned, from a Blues Brother parking contest to Monster Truck and Automobile Red Rover. The evening concludes with a large fireworks display.

Fireworks and Wrecks on the Fourth of July

A night of 4th of July fun begins with a free bus ride around the track at the Kalamazoo Speedway. The night will feature the Bell Tire Four Cylinder Enduro Series, spectator drags, and a Powder Puff Enduro. The evening concludes with a fantastic display of fireworks.

84th Annual Independence Day Celebration

Schoolcraft’s annual celebration kicks off July 4th with a 7 a.m. pancake breakfast at Schoolcraft High School. A 5-Mile Firecracker Roadrace is schedule for 8 a.m., followed by an ice cream social, car show, parade, chicken barbeque and fire truck rides. Freedom Fest

Freedom Fest kicks off on July 4th at McCamley Field at 6 p.m. There will be entertainment, contests and children activities hosted by area churches and the Portage Rotary Club. The Fest will assemble care packages for local servicemen and women stationed in Iraq.

McCamley Field is located on South Westnedge Avenue between Shaver Road and Centre Avenue. Fireworks will display at dusk.

While enjoying a summer meal with my family, a rather bold 10-year-old withdrew a buttered ear of corn from her lips and placed it back on her plate. She pushed a few wisps of hair from her face with the back of her sticky hand before looking at me intently. Something was far more interesting to her than a steak dinner.

The first inquiry in her series of delightful questions was a simple fact-finding mission: “How old are you?”

Still a few years from being offended by my own age, I answered honestly. “Twenty-six.”

Her big round eyes slanted at me in suspicion: “Why aren’t you married?”

My dad nearly choked on his food. As he cleared his throat I gently rested my fork on my plate, stood up and folded my napkin before grabbing the edge of the table and flipping it violently into the air. I replayed that scene in my head a few more times before finally resting my fork on the table and looking thoughtfully at my plate of food.

“Why am I not married?” Only after Valentine’s Day or one too many Oberon’s do I give much thought to single-hood, the disease. Usually it’s a state of being that empowers me to do as I please, when I please, where I please and how I please. As far as I can tell, the ring finger on my left hand likes being naked--it's free to wave through the air without snagging a sweater or scraping someone's arm.

"But you're too beautiful," she insisted.

Flattered by the honest concern and logic of a 10-year-old, I was slightly disheartened to have squashed her romantic ideals. The princes and princesses, fairytales and happily-ever-afters kindly excused themselves from the table. An uninvited guest, loneliness, just showed up for dinner.

In the presence of loneliness we dined in silence. Forced to reflect on our gloomy guest, a whirl of memories surfaced and played out like a depressing funeral slideshow: my first kiss, senior prom, smore's on a rooftop, a long walk, a treasured photograph and exchanging "I love you's" for the first time.

Enter the protagonist: unanswered calls, lies by omission, excuses and more blatant lies. Cue all the music I can't listen to anymore. In comes the voice-over: "I need time to think," "you're such an amazing person, but..." and "It's easier this way." Then tie in a few strings for me to hang on to for too long.

I needed some water to swallow the lump in my throat. I wasn't prepared for anything heavier than strawberry shortcake that night, let alone an uninvited guest. The 10-year-old was watching my every move and I recognized the power in my response to her questions.

"I'm just waiting for the right one," I told her. "He has to be fun, truthful and very nice to me."

Seemingly satisfied by my answer, she nodded in agreement. I was satisfied too, because happily ever after just returned and knocked on the door. We all excused ourselves to entertain our new guest, leaving loneliness to dine in all its glory--by itself.

Searching for something to do this summer?

Technically, some people are searching harder than others. Very technically, indeed.

Geocaching, a modern-day treasure hunt, requires little more than a sense of adventure and a handheld GPS device. The pursuit of plunder began almost ten years ago, when the U.S. Military allowed public use of its satellites and global positioning system, or GPS. Originally coined as “gpsstashing” in 2000, the outdoor game involves searching for well-hidden geocaches at specific longitude and latitude coordinates.

The traditional geocache is a waterproof container that contains a log and pencil for visitors to record findings. Most caches also include small treasures, such as coins, books, CD’s or small toys that may be taken by the finder in exchange for another small treasure.

Hundreds of thousands of geocaches across the globe are registered online at major Web sites such as Geoaching.com, Navicache.com and TerraCaching.com. Each exploration requires finding a cache online, searching for the cache using a GPS device, exchanging treasures, and finally recording the experience both in the cache’s paper log and online. By registering with one of major geocaching sites, the stagnant searcher has access to fantastic finds located all across Southwest Michigan.

Some geocaches contain “travel bugs” or geocoins that are meant to travel from cache to cache. They usually come with a goal, such as to travel westward across the country or to visit ten continents. Their journeys may be recorded online for virtual tracking.

Geocaches vary in both size and complexity. The smallest geocache, a “microcache,” may be as tiny as film canister, and searches may be as simple as locating specific coordinates. More difficult searches may involve locating a cache that contains only clues or puzzles directing the tracker to the next location. Challenging caches may involve a complicated journey to a mountain peak, or discovering a stash hidden underwater or well above ground in a tree.

More than an opportunity to enjoy nature and explore the outdoors, geocaching provides an adventure that promotes family fun and engagement--everywhere. Maybe even as close as the back yard! With little potential to “strike it rich,” geocaching is the unique treasure hunt—where the hunt is more valuable than the treasure.

Kalamazoo Trail Blazin': Week Seven (Please Post)

Kalamazoo City’s largest community park is Spring Valley Park. Stretching more than 185 acres, Spring Valley Park is known for its rolling hills, lake, natural beauty and wildlife.

Many visitors to Spring Valley Park engage in fishing or playing on one of its two playgrounds. But the walker, runner or hiker might be most interested in the challenge brought on by more than two miles of rolling limestone-covered trails. Renowned as the most challenging (but most beautiful) part of the Borgess Half Marathon course, the terrain at Spring Valley Park is certain upgrade the average trail walk—even on the decline.

Spring Valley Park is open from 8 a.m. – 10 p.m., May 1 through October 1. It is accessible from Mt. Olivet Road, Brook Drive or Riverview Avenue. This park has both a restroom facility and drinking fountain.
